Caughron Selected Semi-Finalist for NASDAQ National Teaching Award

Jayme Caughron, Business Education Instructor, Grand River Tech School receives a plaque from Patty Palmer, UMKC Center for Economic Education, Operation Outreach Director, in honor of Caughron's selection as one of 20 regional semi-finalists from the NASDAQ Stock Market Educational Foundation, Inc. These awards are given to high school teachers for excellence and innovation in incorporating economic education into any subject area. Mrs. Caughron's entry was based on her innovative approaches to teaching Entrepreneurship and Economics. In addition, she received a check for $1,000 from the Foundation.

In announcing the selection of the winners, the National Council on Economic Education joined with NASDAQ to recognize that these "Teachers shape the lives of America's youth in a positive way everyday. Those teachers named are helping young people develop an understanding of the basic fundamentals of economics that will have a direct impact on their lives, now and in the future. The knowledge that young people are learning from these creative, dedicated and committed teachers will benefit not just the individual but America as a whole," stated Wick Simmons, Chairman and CEO of NASDAQ Stock Market and its Educational Foundation. "The diverse teaching strategies and innovative classroom activities of the regional winners and semi-finalists in this year's competition offer powerful examples of the many exciting things going on today in economic education," said Robert Duvall, President and CEO of National Council on Economic Education. "The knowledge being imparted by this outstanding group of teachers is helping to equip students with the lifelong skills they can use to make intelligent, quality life choices."

Teachers from 40 states competed with two semi-finalists being selected from Missouri. The National Council on Economic Education, of which Operation Outreach is an affiliate, is a non-profit organization helping students grades K-12 develop economic ways of thinking and problem solving to prepare them to function effectively in a global economy. Through the NCEE network programs reach approximately 120,000 teachers and over 7 million students in more than 70,000 schools in the United States yearly.
